Abstract

Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common form of nerve compression, and its treatment is almost always surgical with the release of the median nerve. However, there is still no consensus on the type of anesthesia used for this procedure. This study aimed to evaluate whether wrist block represents a valid alternative to local anesthesia.
Methods: To that end, 40 patients indicated for surgical release of the carpal tunnel were selected and divided into two groups (Group 1 ‐ underwent carpal tunnel release with local anesthesia; Group 2 ‐ locoregional block). They were assessed for pain at the surgical incision site ‐ intraoperatively, in the postoperative period, and after one month of follow‐up ‐ as well as for functional evaluation and occurrence of complications. In terms of local pain, it was significantly greater (p<0.05) in patients from Group 1.
Results: Regarding functional assessment, Group 2 showed better results with respect to the Quick Dash score (p<0.05). Complications occurred only in Group 1 (p<0.05).
Conclusion: With this study, we were able to demonstrate that wrist anesthetic block is a valid alternative method to local anesthesia.
